Conrad Black has a creamy little ode to John Henry Cardinal Newman in today’s National Post.
Cardinal Newman was a towering figure in the English Catholic Church in the mid to late 19th century. He is well on his way to demi godhood as he will be beatified later this month during Pope Palpatine’s visit to England later this month (Unless the Pope gets arrested first.)
Unfortunately for the advocates for promoting Cardinal Newman to full demi godhood, there is one teeny weeny problem that they have to deal with first: constant rumours that the proposed saint was a flaming faggoty ass nancy boy shirtlifting queer. (This a bad thing for a church dedicated to the proposition that queers are evil).
Newman was probably a sublimated homosexual… He embraced celibacy at the age of 15 and his deepest emotional relationships throughout his life were with the younger men who were his disciples. The first of these intense but sublimated male friendships was with Richard Hurrell Froude (1803-1836); the next, and the most significant relationship in his life, was with Ambrose St John (1815-1875), who lived with Newman for 32 years from 1843 (when St John was 28).
Newman was profoundly affected by the loss of St John, writing after his death: “I have ever thought no bereavement was equal to that of a husband’s or a wife’s, but I feel it difficult to believe that any can be greater, or any one’s sorrow greater, than mine.” Newman directed that he be buried in the same grave as St John, the greatest love of his life.” “I wish, with all my heart, to be buried in Fr Ambrose St John’s grave — and I give this as my last, my imperative will”
It is his burial with his life long companion, Ambrose St. John, that is most embarrassing for the Church.
As part of the path to demi godhood, the Church disobeyed his will to buried next to St. John and tried to move his body to a more “appropriate” resting place(leaving his bosom buddy and life long pal behind of course).
Newman’s grave was opened to exhume his body, but his wooden coffin was found to have disintegrated and his body completely decayed.
I doubt that the Church will ever be entirely free of those pesky little queer rumours. Oh well, better luck with your next saint dudes!
Wow. In a stunning ruling the US Supreme Court has rejected the Vatican’s argument that it has legal immunity from all those sex abuse cases because it is a sovereign state .
The Vatican claimed immunity under a U.S. law, the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act of 1976, that allows foreign states to avoid being sued in court.
But the law contains exceptions. The appeals court cited one of those, ruling the lawsuit has sufficiently alleged that Ronan was an employee of the Vatican acting within the scope of his employment under Oregon law.
In declining to hear the case, the court upheld an appeals court ruling that the Vatican can be sued for sexual abuse if church officials knowingly reassign priests who have been accused of such acts in their previous parishes. The Vatican appeal had argued that the U.S. courts lacked jurisdiction over the Rome-based church..
SNAP (Survivors Network of the Those Abused by Priests) issued a statement saying that the Supreme Court’s decision “gives hope to hundreds of thousands of clergy sex abuse victims across the globe who know lies remain under wraps at the Vatican and will only be unearthed through persistent action by secular justice officials and systems.”
The lawyer at the heart of the suit is looking forward to the day when he can depose Pope Palpatine.
Slowly but surely the Catholic Church is being forced the consequences of refusing to deal with the boy raping priestly scumbags and placing itself above the law in its ongoing conspiracy to hide the decades of rapes from civil authorities.

The handful of Catholic priests who have abused children is relatively small compared to other adults. Where’s all the reporting on the rest?
The virtual equivalent of that strategy is “oooh look. Over there. Bright shiny thingy!” It’s a poor attempt to deflect consideration from the real issues at hand.
In other words, buttfucking child raping Catholic priests with their vows of poverty and celibacy etc and the immense power of the Church that has been actively engaged in covering up these crimes for decades really aren’t so bad when compared to the thousands of school teachers(with claims to a higher morality) who abuse children.
The moral vacuousness of such a statement is truly astonishing. This broadcast combined with other inappropriate outbursts from Church bigwigs says to me that there are large portions of the Church that can’t look at themselves in the mirror.

Well, I can’t say that this statement comes as any great surprise. It was only a matter of time. This senile old bishop obviously didn’t get the bulletin about the Second Vatican Council.
A website [has] quoted Giacomo Babini, the emeritus bishop of Grosseto, as saying he believed a “Zionist attack” was behind the criticism, considering how “powerful and refined” the criticism is.
The comments, which have been denied by the bishop, follow a series of statements from Catholic churchmen alleging the existence of plots to weaken the church and Pope Benedict XVI.
Allegedly speaking to the Catholic website Pontifex, Babini, 81, was quoted as saying: “They do not want the church, they are its natural enemies. Deep down, historically speaking, the Jews are God killers.”…
As the interview appeared on Italy’s main newspaper sites today, complete with the American reaction, the Bishops’ Conference rushed out a statement quoting Babini denying he had ever given the interview in the first place. “Statements I have never made about our Jewish brothers have been attributed to me,” he said.
Babini has previously been quoted on the Pontifex website accusing Jews of exploiting the Holocaust, as well as criticising homosexuality.
Oh man, this scandal(and it is a scandal) of the priestly love for boys and buttsex is going to be the gift that keeps on giving.
The catholic church is so absolutely fucking clueless these days that at each and every opportunity it takes the path that only increases the anger being directed at the vatican.
On good friday Joe Ratzinger’s personal preacher compared the church’s situation to the collective violence suffered by the Jews. In view of the outrage caused by his stupidity, the vatican was quickly forced to issue a statement disowning him. The preacher has since apologized for making the comparison.
Barely two days later on the most important day of the church’s liturgical calendar(aka Easter), a cardinal publicly – in front of millions of people – tells the pope to ignore the suffering of all these abused boys because it’s just “petty gossip of the moment.”
“Holy Father, the people of God are with you and will not let themselves be influenced by the petty gossip of the moment, by the trials that sometimes assail the community of believers,”
Now this speech was not made by just any aging transvestite, rather it was made Angelo Sodano, the Dean of the College of Cardinals. In other words he’s a pretty big piece of scum in what is fast becoming an open sewer of an institution.
Not only that but a centuries old well choreographed tradition laden ceremony was changed specifically to allow the cardinal to speak.
Old Joe must have known what the Dean was going to say.
And to make such a stupid, unfeeling, and crass statement at such a time just boggles my mind.
I really and truly do not get it. The church hierarchy is not not stupid. The men who staff the hierarchy are not stupid(exactly the opposite would be closer to the truth) but when it comes to priests fucking boys in their care, the church seems totally paralyzed. Like in a deer caught in a car’s headlights, it does nothing to avoid the onrushing catastrophe.
Things are obviously going to get a LOT worse for the church before they get better.

Oh, and the Church is STILL praying for the conversion of the Jews in its Easter liturgy despite concrete promises to change. Now so long as they stay well away from me and mine, I could care less what another religion prays for. Still it is rather creepy to be the the focus of someone else’s religious obsessions.
Wow. It has come to this. With the scandal over child molesters raping boys with the full knowledge and acquiescence of its bishops reaching all the way up to Joe Ratzinger himself, the Catholic Church is finding itself in a spot of trouble as the annual spring rebirth of its god day fast approaches.
The Church is taking hit after justifiable hit on this issue and is seemingly at a loss on how to deal realistically with the crisis. The situation is so so bad that the Church has begun shooting the messengers. That ’s usually a sign of incipient panic.
I expected this ploy to come but just not quite so quickly as it has. Joe Ratzinger is going to hide behind the defense of sovereign immunity to try and wriggle his way out of the problem. I think that rather than helping, any move in this direction will only increase the anger of Catholics and cause even more damage to the institution.
According to some legal dude in the Vatican, Mr. Joe Ratzinger has immunity from being called to testify in any pedophilia trial because Vatican City is a sovereign nation and Ratzinger is its head of state.
Dalla Torre outlined the Vatican’s strategy to defend the pope from being forced to testify in several lawsuits concerning sexual abuse which are currently moving through the U.S. legal system. “The pope is certainly a head of state, who has the same juridical status as all heads of state,” he said, arguing he therefore had immunity from foreign courts. Lawyers representing victims of sexual abuse by priests in several cases in the United States have said they would want the pope to testify in an attempt to try to prove the Vatican was negligent. But the pope is protected by diplomatic immunity because more than 170 countries, including the United States, have diplomatic relations with the Vatican. They recognize it as a sovereign state and the pope as its sovereign head.
Completely ignoring the fact that Pope Palpatine is the one to appoint and remove Catholic bishops, Dalla Torre rejected the claim that Ratzinger is ultimately the boss of Catholic bishops and therefore responsible for them: “The Church is not a multi-national corporation. He has (spiritual) primacy over the Church … but every bishop is legally responsible for running a diocese.”
What a bunch of weasels.
Wow. The Catholic Church must be relieved at the moment. It gets to take a break from the sordid scandals of it priests raping boys in their charge.
Today that role is played by the Mormons and the American Boy Scouts.
That would be the same Mormons who reject homosexuality as sinful(no heaven for you if you’re gay and like to suck cock) and is in the forefront in financing anti gay initiatives across the United States.
And the same American Boy Scouts that won’t allow gay men to be scout troup leaders because

In an Oregon courtroom the two organizations stand accused of allowing boy rape to occur and then covering up the abuse for decades.
The case has uncovered extensive files kept by both groups cloaking sexual predators.
The Boy Scouts of America has long kept an extensive archive of secret documents that chronicle the sexual abuse of young boys by Scout leaders over the years. The “perversion files,” a nickname the Boy Scouts are said to have used for the documents, have rarely been seen by the public, but that could all change in the coming weeks in an Oregon courtroom. The lawyer for a man who was molested in the 1980s by a Scout leader has obtained about 1,000 Boy Scouts sex files and is expected to release some of them at a trial that began Wednesday. The lawyer says the files show how the Boy Scouts have covered up abuse for decades.
Membership in the Boy Scouts is strongly encouraged by the LDS Church and they are accused of having collaborated in the cover-up.
The Mormon bishop who also served as head of the Scout troop, Gordon McEwen, confronted [accused pedophile Timur] Dykes after receiving a report of abuse by the mother of one boy in the troop in January 1983. In a video deposition played for the jury, the bishop said Dykes admitted abusing 17 boys. But McEwen said he contacted the parents of all 17 boys and the boys themselves, and none would confirm any abuse. Dykes was arrested in 1983 and pleaded guilty to attempted sexual abuse, received probation and was ordered to stay away from children. Clark told the jury Dykes continued with his scouting activities until he was arrested in July 1984 during a routine traffic stop while he was driving a van full of Scouts on a camping trip. A spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America at its headquarters in Irving, Texas, said in a statement the organization cannot comment on details of the case. But it has worked hard on awareness and prevention efforts, including background checks.
The Catholic Church is doubtlessly happy for this momentary diversion from their own boy-fucking scandals. But it shouldn’t relax. Andrew Sullivan points out that the scandal is just begun outside of the US.
It is beyond argument that the conspiracy to cover up these rapes by the Church and other organizations has gone on for decades. In other words, in hoping to protect the reputation of their institutions by hiding these crimes rather than reporting them at the outset, they just may have destroyed them.
Like Martha Stewart they are learning that it is not the crime but the coverup that gets you in the end.
I know it’s boring but words and their meanings are important because in the circumstances below if you don’t use them correctly you could find yourself unemployed, bankrupt, and/or publicly humiliated.
