How long a prison sentence should a pedophile get when he repeatedly rapes and sodomizes a girl over a 2 1/2 -year period when she was between the ages of three and five?

Life(which is 25 years in Canada),  15 years?  10 years?  What about time off for good behaviour? How many years will he have to serve before he’s released to a halfway house?

A lot of people in the US – despite a Supreme Court ruling forbidding it – want to see the death penalty apply to the perpetrators of such atrocities.

And in Canada?  Well such a heinous and unforgiveable crime(s) will net you a whole 100 days in the slammer.

Yup, Calgary Youth court Judge Lillian McLellan sentenced passed this ever so harsh sentence on a youth who cannot be named this last Thursday(Sept 2).

Now to be fair, regardless of what Judge McLellan may think privately, her hands are tied by our Youth Criminal Justice Act which states that custodial sentences must be divided into two-thirds detention and one-third community supervision. The act also mandates custodial sentences only in most serious of cases and then only for for a few  years.

I’m all for  a Youth Criminal Justice Act.  It makes for good public policy.  After all, some kids just get off on the wrong track and need some gentle nudging to go in the right direction.

BUT I would would make a clear distinction between crimes against property and crimes against people.   Stealing a car and going for a joy ride is pretty damned inconsequential in the great scheme of things.  On the other hand, hurting someone  – whether it’s murder, manslaughter, rape and the like – is a far, far different thing.

Youths accused of such acts should be tried in the adult court system and should face adult penalties.  Nor should they have the shield of privacy to hide behind.

Such a differentiation seems so basic to me as to be “common sense” but it seems that I’m a minority of one.

If the Tories really want to cement my vote they could take a serious look a making some changes to our youth “justice” system.

Conspiracy theory du jour

On September 2, 2010, in Antisemitism, Conspiracy theories, Jewish/Israeli stuff, by Backseat Blogger

Sweet zombie jeebus.  Just when you think the anti Semites anti Zionists could not stoop any lower along comes something to prove me wrong.

Like these apalling comments commenting on the orchestrated murder of four Jews(including a pregnant woman) :

It's the Joos, man! It's always the Joos!

When reading comments like these, I sometimes despair of my fellow man.

Worst of all is the fact that if you were to challenge them on what they’ve written, they wouldn’t understand because they think they’re among the truly righteous.

Oxymoron of the day: an honest Liberal

On September 2, 2010, in Grits, News/Current Events, by Backseat Blogger

…and for a change we’re talking about the provincial Liberals out here in Lotusland.

The anger surrounding the HST is just as white hot now a couple of months after its implementation on July 1 as it was when it was first passed(by in an order in council no less. The leftoids that rail against Darth Harper and his fascism should take note of this).

Despite all the bloviating about the issue, the HST is here to stay BUT that doesn’t mean that the provincial Liberals are out of the woods yet.

This is a government(including many statements from the the Minister of Finance) himself that has sworn up and down that the HST was NOT on the radar before the last provincial election(May 2009).

Well,( you know what’s coming, don’t you?) it turns out that our province’s bureaucrats were doing their job and analyzing the cost/benefits of introducing the HST into BC well before last May.

They even sent the Minister of Finance a briefing note on the subject!

To be clear, I hold the civil service blameless in this fiasco.  They did their job and did it well.  It was their political masters that screwed the pooch.

So now the Minister has a choice.  He can admit he lied to the public or he can admit that’s he’s too stupid and lazy to read what his bureaucrats put before him.

Guess which route he took?  He tried to have his cake and eat it too.

Hansen said Wednesday he recalled skimming the briefing note, but insisted he did not seriously consider the HST until after the election.

“The ministry was obviously looking at HST related issues but it is not something that ever went forward,” he said.

“It obviously came to my desk. It never went any farther because it was not something that was part of what we were looking at.”

Talk about Lies and the Lying Liars Who Tell Them

I say the people should skip trying to get the HST revoked and move straight to recallingl the entire Liberal caucus.

Sweet zombie jeebus, I know Liberals are stupid ;) but do they have to go all batshit crazy as well?

First there was Lawrence Martin wishing for the good ol’ days before the nightmare of Stephen Harper when Canada had two(actually one and half but who’s counting?) federal Liberal parties.

The question of whether old-style Tories can ever return to claim control of the party is of defining importance. The Canada we know was built by two moderate parties. It was a blend of the centre and the centre-left. If the old Tories don’t re-emerge, the Canada of the future will be measurably different – a hybrid of the centre and the hard right.

In other words,  “If only the Tories could return to being ersatz Liberals all would be well with the world.”

I hate it when analysts(such as they are) view the political system in isolation from the the voters.  In each of the last two election it has been the voters who have validated the Tories and their policies and driven the Liberals to historic lows.  Maybe, just maybe, it’s because the voters like what the Tories are offering the voters?

The fact that the voters haven’t yet returned to the Liberal party(as has historically been the case after a few years of Tory administration) must be blowing Mr. Martin’s mind.

And then there’s Frances Russell at the Winnipeg Free Press.  She must be the only Liberal west of the Ontario/Manitoba border.  If today’s piece is any example, I think the loneliness has driven her insane.

She rambles only about the danger of Fox News North and how the Prime Minister – ominously – is going to run roughshod over the poor, poor, bureaucrats in order to have his propoganda broadcast 24/7 to gullible Canadians.

Unlike the ephemeral “soldiers with guns in our streets,” we have the very real and menacing prospect of a major national media chain being bulldozed into a blatant propaganda tool by and for the party in power.

The same national media chain intends to launch a Category One television news channel in addition to its string of newspapers to blare forth its political message 24/7. More ominously, the PMO is prepared, according to credible reports, to walk over any cavilling by the nation’s broadcast watchdog, the Canadian Radio Television and Telecommunications Corporation, to grant Sun Media’s masters that coveted first-class licence.

And all this bloviating is over a TV station that has yet to broadcast a single word!

And then there is that pesky internet.  It lets people say the darndest things!

The tone of political discourse, already shifted sharply right with the advent of Conrad Black’s National Post in 1998, is about to take a quantum leap further down that road. The signs are numerous and ominous: The internet is already doused daily with the vitriol of thousands of anonymous far-right bloggers who slander and libel politicians, the media and all opponents with vile, often illiterate postings. Parliament and the country’s entire political culture is being dug ever deeper into a mire of character assassination, personal insult and attack, smear campaigns, relentless and ruthless partisanship and denigration and demonization of any and all opponents.

Of course, Ms Russell breathes not a word about all the vitriol of thousands of LEFTOIDS bloggers who litter the internet with their often illiterate postings. Hypocritical much, Ms Russell?

In closing her piece, Ms Russell can’t resist the impluse to equate the PM with the jackboots of fascism:

It all makes soldiers with guns on Canada’s streets more plausible with every passing day.

Ms Russell has Harper Derangement Syndrome real bad.

I’d vote for him!

John Bolton, erstwhile(and unconfirmed) US Ambassador to the UN and the dude that liberals and progressives love to hate, is not saying no to running for president in 2012.

If I were American, I’d vote for him for sure.

Bolton for president in 2012? Hell yes!

Maggie Gallagher at the Pearly Gates

Hilarous vid of Maggie Gallagher seeking entrance into heaven.

For those not up on their American politics, Maggie Gallagher, bigot, is one of the leaders of National Organization for Marriage.  They’re the one fighting advocating ‘traditional’ marriage and calling homosexuals to task for ever ‘perversion’ under heaven.  In short, she is a bat shit crazy looney tune.

Worth Dieing For? Absolutely!

A Japanese man has pleaded guilty to burning down his family home after his mother threw away some of his favourite robot toys.

Yoshifumi Takabe told Kobe District Court in western Japan he became suicidal after losing the figures, which he says were partners he wanted to spend his life with.

The 30-year-old, who lived with his mother, torched the family home in retaliation, saying he wanted to die with his robots in the fire.

His mother had long complained that Takabe was cluttering the house with enough toys to fill at least 300 boxes.

The blaze on August 9 last year completely destroyed their two-story wooden house, but no-one was injured.

The robot toys were figures from the Gundam animated TV series, which started in the 1970s, about space wars involving giant robots.
